Bilingual - Picturebooks is by children for children.
A project for the world of picture books.
Books designed and written by children for children, and written for the whole world in countless languages. Especially in the digital age of YouTube, Instagram and the like, it is more important than ever to pave the way for children to books, so that stories they read become their own images in their minds.
1st place in the Digitalisation Award of the State of Schleswig-Holstein in the category "Digital Learning".
Bilingual picturebooks set new standards
But unfortunately there are very few of them. This is exactly where Bilingual-Picturebooks comes in, offering picture books designed and written by children for download in different languages. The languages offered range from German and English to French, Low German and Farsi. In African countries in particular, the picture books available for children are not particularly well developed. In addition to pure text translations, many versions are also recorded as audio books.
The web agency gradwerk was entrusted with the implementation of a very special project. A website full of children's picture books translated into countless languages, digitally downloadable for everyone. Behind this is an idea of the Lübeck Book Pirates Association, which has set itself the goal of enabling children and young people to experience literature creatively and independently.
Because reading promoters from all over the world agree that the first contact with a book should always be in the mother tongue. The need for bilingual books is enormous. But unfortunately there are very few of them. Bilingual-Picturebooks starts exactly here and offers picture books designed and written by children for download in different languages. The languages offered range from German and English to French, Low German and Farsi. In African countries in particular, the picture books available for children are not particularly well developed. In addition to pure text translations, many versions are also recorded as audio books.
Thanks to the CMS 6 platform, the book pirate editors can fill all books with their content pages, i.e. pictures and texts, via CMS database entries and define the corresponding PDF template. The generation then takes place on demand on the website, triggered by the site visitors.
Users can select their desired book on the Bilingual-Picturebooks website and determine various parameters, such as first language and second language, orientation, page format, stitching and print quality. At the end, a PDF document generated on the server especially for the user is ready for download. Publishers have also started to take notice. Carlsen Verlag, for example, is represented with a first picture book, "Wir sind doch keine Angsthasen" ("We're not scaredy-cats"), which has been translated into six languages; more are to follow soon. Bilingual-Picturebooks promises to be a very special success project.
Over 30 free books in more than 80 languages
From Albanian to Zapotec, the children's stories are available in over 80 languages and can be combined with two languages per issue.
Different output formats
On the website, users can determine in which output formats the free children's books can be used. These include digital and print formats.
Bücherpiraten e. V.
Bücherpiraten e. V. started in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in 2002 in a tent and has been at home in a historic house in the middle of Lübeck's old town since the summer of 2011. A patron of the book pirates bought the house and had it converted. She makes it available to the book pirates for a symbolic rent of one euro per month. The book pirates have always inspired children and young people to read stories.
